I remember the day I turned thirty really clearly. I worked in an office then, and had decided to tell no-one about my birthday. As Jacqueline points out in her 30th Birthday Planning guide, leaving the twenties behind can be a little bit traumatic!

On the day itself, I tried to sneak in as quietly as possible to keep a low profile. But everywhere I turned there was someone wishing me happy birthday and joking with me about reaching my fourth decade. It was only when I turned to my desk and saw my chair decorated with balloons and a big thirty sticker did I realize who had spilled the beans – my supervisor (curse those employee records!)

That was something of a surprise, but these days it’s surprise birthday parties that are all the rage.
